Rick Reyes
LA Styler, UCLA School of Law

Hey there, my name is Rick Reyes. I am currently a law student at the UCLA School of Law, and a menswear enthusiast. I currently reside in Los Angeles, the westside, obviously. When I’m not in school or studying (which is 99 percent of the time), I like to go to Downtown LA and enjoy a well made cup of coffee.

Talk about your first experience drinking coffee. Did you like/hate it the first time you tried it?

I have always loved coffee. It should not come as a surprise that we all begin our coffee journey with a crappy cup of instant-made coffee. Okay, well, hum at least that was my experience…anyone else? No? Okay. Anyhow, from the moment I had the first sip, I was hooked. I have now been drinking coffee for the past couple of years, I would like to say that my standards have gone up. There are three things in life that I am extremely picky about: food, clothes, and coffee. As such, if the coffee does not live up to my expectations, I will let you know.

Who is your favorite roaster? Which Roast?

I have been to Portland twice, and although I love L.A., Portland stole my “Heart.” See what I did there? No? Okay, so my favorite coffee roaster is Heart Coffee Roasters. With respect to favorite roast, I have always leaned towards the Ethiopian side for the most part. African beans for some reason are great tasting in general.

Favorite food/sweets to pair with your coffee?

I personally do not like to drink coffee while I eat. However, given the growing number of “cafes,” they sometimes make it impossible not to grab a bite. So, I usually mix my coffee with sandwiches (Hint: get the one with prosciutto. You can thank me later). When it comes down to dessert, I like my cheesecake with coffee…wait my coffee with cheesecake…hum, you know what I mean. Croissants are always a great companion; Vive la Coffee!

What would your advice be to someone who doesn’t drink coffee currently who’s should?

Seek professional mental health…kidding (not really). I would say start with something milk-based. Nowadays, coffee shops make all kind of flavored lattes which are not as strong or bitter. Then work your way up to pour overs and cold brew. You got this; I believe in you!

Favorite Drink?

Cortado, and cortado, and…did I mention cortado?
